چکیده

The Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability with material ablation through the unstable interface is the key physics that determines success or failure of inertial fusion energy (IFE) generation, as the RT instability potentially quenches ignition and burn by disintegrating the IFE target. We present two suppression schemes of the RT growth without significant degradation of the target density. The first scheme is to generate double ablation structure in high-Z doped plastic targets. In addition to the electron ablation surface, a new ablation surface is created by x-ray radiation from the high-Z ions. Contrary to the previous thought, the electron ablation surface is almost completely stabilized by extremely high flow velocity. On the other hand, the RT instability on the radiative ablation surface is significantly moderated. The second is to enhance the nonlocal nature of the electron heat transport by illuminating the target with long wavelength laser light, whereas the high ablation pressure is generated by irradiating short wavelength laser light. The significant suppression of the RT instability may increase the possibility of impact ignition which uses a high velocity fuel colliding with a preformed main

Bubble acceleration in the ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability.

The highly nonlinear evolution of the single-mode Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) at the ablation front of an accelerated target is investigated in the parameter range typical of inertial confinement fusion implosions. A new phase of the nonlinear bubble evolution is discovered. After the linear growth phase and a short constant-velocity phase, it is found that the bubble is accelerated to ve...

Theory of the Ablative Richtmyer–Meshkov Instability

30 LLE Review, Volume 77 In inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions, a laser irradiation induces a shock wave propagating through the target. During the shock transit time, the ablation front travels at a constant velocity, and any surface perturbations could grow due to the Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM)–like instability.1–5 Later, when a rarefaction wave reaches the ablation surface, the acceler...

Growth Rates of the Ablative Rayleigh–Taylor Instability in Inertial Confinement Fusion

20 LLE Review, Volume 73 In recent years, several authors1–14 have studied the linear growth of the Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instability in ablation fronts accelerated by laser irradiations. The determination of the instability growth rate is crucial to the success of inertial confinement fusion (ICF)15,16 because an excessive distortion of the front could lead to a severe degradation of the capsul...

Stabilizing effect of anisotropic thermal diffusion on the ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability.

Linear theory of the ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability in anisotropic diffusive materials is presented. This analysis indicates that enhancing diffusion in a plane transverse to the mean longitudinal flow can strongly reduce the growth of the instability. In the context of inertial confinement fusion, it is shown that anisotropic diffusion can be achieved using a laminated ablator made of su...

Weakly nonlinear theory for the ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability.

A weakly nonlinear model is proposed for the Rayleigh-Taylor instability in the presence of ablation and thermal transport. The second harmonic generation efficiency of a single-mode disturbance is computed, as well as the nonlinear correction to the exponential growth of the fundamental modulation. Mode coupling in the spectrum of a multimode disturbance is thoroughly analyzed. The ablative st...
